Carnival 2018 on St Helena
Carnival is held on a bi-annual basis on St Helena and is done in aid of Cancer Awareness & Support. Each Carnival has a theme & this year it was 'Spirit of the Sea.' - with St Helena being a volcanic island surrounded by the Ocean - it was a pretty appropriate theme which saw the likes of everything from mermaids to whalesharks, to pirates, to jellyfish adorning the mile long Street Parade which started at the top of the Town, ending up at the Seaside
For me, this year was a bit different having a two-year old who may or may not have wanted to participate in the parade, so instead of adorning the biggest, brightest custom I could find/ make, as I would have done in previous years - we chose to be spectators at the beginning which was great to watch, before joining in on the way down into town. Still a great experience and my little one loved it in his home-made hat...
It was a great community spirit with some very creative customs. All done in the name of raising the funds & profile of Cancer Awareness & Support on St Helena.
The island certainly comes alive as we head from Spring into Summer over the next few months - there's so much to look forward to as the locals all head back to the open air swimming pool & the Seaside. Just last Sunday we went to Rupert's Beach for an impromptu Breakfast Cook-Up with my friends & our kids & had a fabulous care-free time - that's life on St Helena - Colourful & free.
